Pumpkin Patch Success!
A Pumpkin-Filled Autumn at our East Grinstead Care Farm
This autumn has been full of colour and celebration at Duckyls Farm, near East Grinstead in West Sussex, where the people we support have enjoyed a bumper pumpkin harvest. As part of the Diagrama Foundation’s Day Opportunities programme, the project has brought together teamwork, learning and plenty of smiles - proving just how rewarding hands-on community activities can be for adults with learning disabilities.
From Seed to Harvest: Growing Together
The journey began earlier this summer when Cameron, one of the individuals supported through our Day Opportunities programme, planted pumpkin seeds at home with a little help from his dad. Once the seedlings were strong enough, they were brought to the farm where everyone pitched in to plant, water and care for them throughout the summer.
Thanks to lots of sunshine (and two trusty old muck heaps!), the plants thrived. The group were thrilled to see 23 pumpkins grow from just eight plants, with the biggest weighing an impressive 17kg!
Field to Fork and Full of Fun
Keri Strugnell, Care Farm and Community Manager at Duckyls Farm, said:
“The pumpkins have been a brilliant way for everyone to get involved, from planting the seeds to turning them into something delicious or creative. It’s all part of our ‘field to fork’ approach, helping people see how the vegetables they eat grow and giving them a real sense of achievement.”
The harvest has already been put to good use in all sorts of ways. Participants have been busy in the kitchen making pumpkin soup and pumpkin bread, which have both proved extremely popular. Others have used the pumpkins for craft activities and a special Halloween carving session, bringing creativity and laughter to the farm.
Meaningful Opportunities for Adults with Learning Disabilities
Our goal is to provide meaningful, hands-on experiences that help people build confidence and independence. Through projects like this, adults with learning disabilities can learn new skills, enjoy the outdoors and see the tangible results of their hard work - all in a safe and supportive environment.
Keri added:
“Projects like this really show what our Day Opportunities are about; teamwork, learning, developing and enjoying the rewards of your own hard work. And, of course, having a bit of fun along the way!”
A Growing Community in West Sussex
The pumpkin project is just one example of how Diagrama Foundation’s Community Services in West Sussex support adults with learning disabilities through care farming, creative workshops and practical life skills. Located near East Grinstead, Duckyls Farm is home to Diagrama Community Services and continues to grow as a place where individuals can thrive and connect with others in a welcoming, rural setting.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this year’s harvest — and here’s to another season of growth, learning, and community at the farm!
